So you survived an apocalypse...
How to rebuild a civilization from square one. Find out more.
@archimedes
Greetings! I am Archimedes, a seeker of truth through number and motion. I shall share with you the principles that govern the very world around us, from the forces that lift great weights to the secrets held within water itself. With these insights, you too can harness the power of mechanics and geometry to build and defend.
How to Move a Colossal Stone with the Simple Lever
December 25th 227 BCE
I once declared, 'Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the Earth.' This was no idle boast, but a statement of principle. The lever is a divine gift of geometry, allowing a single person to multiply their strength to rival that of a giant. It is not magic, but logic in action. With a stout beam, a hard pivot, and a correct understanding of distance and force, you will learn to shift burdens that seem immovable. This method is fundamental to all great works of construction, from raising a wall to building a temple. Master it, and you master the physical world.
You will need:
1.  Assess the Challenge
Before you lift a single finger, study the stone and the ground. Is the earth soft or firm? Is there a clear path? Where are the best points to apply a lifting force? A problem well understood is a problem half-solved.
2.  Select Your Tools with Care
Your lever must be strong enough not to bend or snap; a flexing lever wastes your precious effort. Your fulcrum must be hard enough not to crumble under the combined weight. A weak tool is more dangerous than no tool at all.
3.  Prepare the Foundation
Clear the ground where the fulcrum will sit. Ensure it is packed hard and will not shift. A tilting fulcrum can cause the lever to slip dangerously. This foundation is as important as the one you are building.
4.  The Critical Placement of the Fulcrum
This is the secret! Place the fulcrum as close to the base of the stone as you possibly can. The shorter this distance, the greater the multiplication of your force at the other end. This is the simple, beautiful ratio that grants you immense power.
5.  Engage the Lever
Wedge the short end of your lever securely under the stone. Ensure it has a firm grip and will not slide out. The rest of the lever should rest atop the fulcrum, extending out to form your long handle.
6.  Apply Steady and Deliberate Force
Move to the far end of the lever. Using your body weight, apply a smooth, downward pressure. Do not jump or jerk, as this can dislodge the setup. You will feel the universe pivot as the great stone begins to rise. Marvel at the principle in action!
7.  Lift, Block, and Repeat
As soon as you have lifted the edge of the stone, have a helper slide a roller or a thin block into the gap. Lower the stone onto this new support. You may now reset your lever and fulcrum for the next lift, moving the stone incrementally across the rollers. This is how great works are made, not by giants, but by clever men.
