How to Establish a Settlement Grid: The Roman Method

A settlement built without logic is a body without a skeleton—weak and destined for collapse. I have founded countless camps and colonies, and their strength begins with the order of their streets. A proper grid ensures swift movement of men and supplies, simplifies sanitation, and provides clear lines of sight for defense. It is the physical manifestation of discipline. Follow my instruction, and you will lay a foundation not of mud and chaos, but of stone and purpose. This is not mere building; it is the imposition of civilization upon the wilderness.
You will need:
A sighting cross (Groma): Two wooden arms of equal length, joined at their center to form a perfect cross. Plumb lines must hang from the end of each arm.
A central pole to mount the groma upon, sharpened to be driven firmly into the ground.
At least 100 wooden marking stakes, with tops stripped of bark or painted for visibility.
A heavy mallet or the back of an axe for driving stakes into hard ground.
A measuring rope or chain, at least 100 feet long, with knots or marks at standard intervals (e.g., every 10 feet).
A crew of four disciplined assistants who can follow precise orders without question.
1. Select and Prepare the Center Point
Choose the most commanding or logical center for your settlement. This is your 'umbilicus'. Clear the ground and drive your groma's central pole firmly into the earth at this exact spot. All order will radiate from here. A poor center compromises the entire endeavor.
2. Mount and Level the Groma
Place your sighting cross atop the pole. Wait for the four plumb lines to hang perfectly still. The instrument is level when each string hangs parallel to the central pole. Do not proceed until this is achieved; haste is the enemy of sound engineering.
3. Establish the Primary Axis (Decumanus)
Have two assistants move out in opposite directions. Align your eye through two opposing arms of the groma and direct your men left or right until they are perfectly in line. Have them drive stakes at intervals. This is your first great road.
4. Establish the Secondary Axis (Cardo)
Without moving the groma, sight along the other two arms. This line must be at a perfect right angle to the first. Direct your other two assistants to drive stakes along this new axis. Your settlement now has its foundational cross, the mark of civilization.
5. Extend the Main Axes to the Boundaries
Extend these two main lines to the planned boundaries of your settlement by moving the groma along the established line of stakes and repeating the sighting process. This requires precision. A wavering line is a sign of a wavering mind.
6. Measure and Mark the City Blocks (Insulae)
Beginning from the central intersection, use your measuring rope to mark out the corners of your primary blocks along the Cardo and Decumanus. Drive a large stake at each corner. These dimensions must be uniform for a proper, defensible grid.
7. Lay Out the Parallel Streets
Move the groma to a block corner stake on the Decumanus. Align it with the Decumanus, then use the right-angle arms to sight a new line parallel to the Cardo. Repeat this process at each corner to create the network of lesser streets.
8. Verify Your Angles with the 3-4-5 Rule
To ensure a true right angle, take a rope and tie knots to create lengths of 3, 4, and 5 units. When formed into a triangle, the angle between the sides of length 3 and 4 is a perfect right angle. Use this to check your key intersections. A legionary trusts his tools, but verifies their results.
9. Designate and Record the Layout
