From the depths of my exile, I have charted the very pathways of the soul and the intricate machinations of the earthly city. Here, I offer the fruits of my journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, that you too may learn to navigate the treacherous currents of sin and aspire to the divine light. May my allegories illuminate your own path toward justice and eternal truth.
A Guide to Examining Your Conscience in the Dark Wood
December 10th 1310
Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward path had been lost. Many souls wander so, their way obscured by the shadows of their own making. This guide is not for the righteous, but for those who, like me, have lost the path and find it barred by dreadful beasts. Herein I will teach you a method to confront the specters within your own soul—the Leopard of Lust, the Lion of Pride, and the She-Wolf of Greed—so you may know your own failings and begin the arduous journey back toward the light.
You will need:
A quiet and secluded place, where the world's clamor cannot reach you. This is your Selva Oscura.
An hour of time, ideally as the sun sets or rises, when the boundary between worlds is thin.
A spirit of true humility, for without it, self-examination becomes an exercise in vanity.
Parchment and a quill, or a memory sharpened by the fear of God, to serve as your record.
Courage. For you must look upon the disfigurement of your own soul without flinching.
1. Enter the Wood and Acknowledge Your State
Retreat to your chosen quiet place. Do not rush. Sit in the silence and confess to yourself this truth: 'I am lost.' Speak it aloud if you must. The journey cannot begin until you admit you have strayed from the true path. This admission is the first glimmer of light in the oppressive dark.
2. Still the Soul and Unspool Your Days
Close your eyes. Let the frantic thoughts of the world subside, like mud settling in still water. Then, begin to walk back through the memory of your recent days. Do not judge yet, merely observe your actions, your words, and the secret motions of your heart as if watching another man.
3. Confront the Leopard of Lust
Seek now the sleek and spotted Leopard. This is the sin of disordered desire, of placing fleeting pleasure before eternal good. Where have you sought comfort in the senses to the detriment of your soul or your duty to others? Note every instance where ease and indulgence made you stray.
4. Face the Lion of Pride
Next, listen for the roar of the Lion. Pride is the belief that you are the architect of your own greatness. Where have you held yourself above others? When did you refuse counsel, harbor contempt, or act from a place of wounded vanity? Mark these moments, for they are chains of the heaviest sort.
5. Identify the She-Wolf of Greed
Finally, you must confront the ravenous She-Wolf, who is never satisfied. This is Greed, for wealth, for power, for reputation. Where has envy of another's fortune consumed you? When has the desire for more made you act without charity? This beast is lean with insatiable hunger; you must starve it.
6. Inscribe the Account of Your Soul
Take up your quill, or call upon your memory. For each beast, record the specific transgressions you have uncovered. Do not use vague terms. Write 'I spoke with cruelty to my neighbor out of pride,' not 'I was unkind.' Naming the sin precisely is the first step to its expulsion. This is your confession.
7. Turn Your Gaze Toward the Hill
Having mapped the shadows within, do not despair. This grim knowledge is your guide. Now, turn your mind's eye toward the good you wish to become, like a traveler spying a sunlit hill beyond the dark valley. Resolve to take one step upon that upward path, armed with the knowledge of the beasts that would drag you down.
