So you survived an apocalypse...
How to rebuild a civilization from square one. Find out more.
@dantealighieri
From the depths of my exile, I have charted the very pathways of the soul and the intricate machinations of the earthly city. Here, I offer the fruits of my journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, that you too may learn to navigate the treacherous currents of sin and aspire to the divine light. May my allegories illuminate your own path toward justice and eternal truth.
The Path of Purification: Climbing the Seven Terraces of Self-Improvement
February 18th 1292
I have journeyed through the dark wood of despair and the infernal abyss, and I tell you truly that the path to a righteous will begins not with a sudden leap, but a laborious climb. This is no mere allegory for poets, but a practical method for the soul's ascent. Here, I offer a guide modeled on the trials of Mount Purgatorio, a way to purge the character of its flaws. By confronting each of the seven vices that weigh us to the earth, we may unburden our spirit, one terrace at a time, until our will is made straight and free, ready to rise to the stars.
You will need:
1.  Begin the Ascent: The Foundation of Resolve
Before you take the first step upon this mountain, you must examine your own heart. In your journal, write down why you undertake this difficult path. Without a true desire for purification, your labor is meaningless. This is the gate: pass through it with a contrite spirit, as I did, leaving the world of sin behind you, if only for these hours of trial.
2.  First Terrace: Breaking the Neck of Pride
Take up your heavy stone, hoisting it upon your shoulders. Walk a set distance, perhaps one hundred paces, with your head bowed by the weight. With each step, contemplate your own smallness and recite the virtues of a humble soul. Think of those you have wronged with your arrogance. This physical weight is the image of your sin, and in bearing it, you learn to cast it off. Do not cease until your spirit, not just your back, feels the lesson.
3.  Second Terrace: Sewing Shut the Eyes of Envy
Find a place to sit safely and affix the blindfold. For a quarter of an hour, you must rely only on your hearing. Listen to the world without seeing the possessions, beauties, or fortunes of others that stir your jealousy. Contemplate charity, the opposite virtue. Pray for the good of those you envy. When you cannot see the world to compare it with your own state, the soul begins to find contentment in its own being.
4.  Third Terrace: Calming the Blinding Smoke of Wrath
In a darkened room or with your blindfold once more, sit in silence. Your anger is a blinding smoke that chokes reason. Here, you must navigate that inner darkness not with sight, but with meekness. Bring to mind an instance of your wrath. Instead of reliving the fire, recite a prayer for peace or focus on measured breathing until the tempest in your heart subsides. Practice forgiveness, for it is the light that cuts through this gloom.
5.  Fourth Terrace: Spurring the Soul from Sloth
Sloth is the failure to love God with proper zeal, which appears as laziness in worldly and spiritual matters. Go now to your open path and run. Do not race, but run with purpose until breath is short and muscles ache. This physical exertion is a prayer of the body, a declaration against spiritual apathy. While you run, focus your mind on a single, worthy goal you have long neglected. Feel the will to act rekindle within you.
6.  Fifth Terrace: Releasing the Grasp of Avarice
Find a patch of bare earth and lie face down upon it, your arms at your sides. Here, the avaricious and the prodigal are bound, cleaving to the dust they so loved or squandered. Remain prostrate for a time, feeling your connection to the base earth. Contemplate the poverty of the spirit that comes from chaining your heart to gold or possessions. Pray for generosity and a spirit detached from worldly goods, that your gaze may be lifted heavenward once more.
7.  Sixth Terrace: Mastering the Hunger of Gluttony
For one day, from sunrise to sunset, abstain from all food, taking only water. This is not to punish the body, but to teach it. Every pang of hunger is a reminder of the difference between the body's need and the soul's desire. When you feel the urge to eat, turn your mind to spiritual nourishment. Contemplate the virtue of temperance. This discipline sharpens the will and clarifies what is essential for life.
8.  Seventh Terrace: Purifying the Fire of Lust
The final cornice is purified by fire. You shall not walk through flames, but you will face the heat. Stand or walk in the full heat of the midday sun until you feel its power upon your skin. Let this external fire represent the internal one. As the sun burns away impurities from the earth, let it be a symbol for the purification of your own desires. Meditate on chastity and the proper, sacred order of love, turning raw passion into a higher, divine affection.
9.  Arrival in the Earthly Paradise: A Will Made Free
You have climbed the mountain. You have faced your sins and performed the penance. Now, sit in quiet contemplation. The path is complete. Notice the lightness in your spirit. Your will, once crooked and enslaved by vice, is now upright, simple, and whole. I can guide you no further; from here, your own cleansed reason and righteous desire must be your guide. You are now lord of yourself.
