How to Build Your House Upon the Rock

I have seen many build their homes, and truly I say to you, a house built on sand will not stand when the storms come. This is a guide not just for shaping wood and stone, but for establishing a foundation for your life and your community that will endure any flood or wind. The wise person hears these words and puts them into practice. Do not be like the foolish one who builds a beautiful home only to see it washed away. Let us build something that will last, together.
You will need:
1.  Survey Your Ground
Before you lay a single stone, walk the plot of your life. Ask yourself: on what do I stand? Is it the praise of others? The gathering of wealth? These are sand. Look for the bedrock of truth that does not shift with the winds of fortune or fear. Be honest, for the whole house depends on this first assessment.
2.  Dig Down to the Rock
This is the hardest work, and many avoid it. You must dig past the easy soil of habit and convenience. You must remove the rubble of old grudges and fears. Keep digging until your shovel strikes something solid, something that does not yield. This is the firm foundation I speak of. It is the unshakeable truth of love and compassion.
3.  Lay Your Cornerstone
Now, choose the first and most important stone. This cornerstone will align all others. Let it be this: Love the Lord your God, and love your neighbor as yourself. Every other stone you lay—be it honesty, patience, or justice—must be set in relation to this one. If your cornerstone is true, your house will rise straight and strong.
4.  Gather Your Stones
Consider the principles that will be the walls of your house. Will you build with stones of forgiveness, or hold onto the crumbling bricks of resentment? Will you use the smooth stones of peace, or the sharp, jagged rocks of judgment? Choose your materials wisely, for you will live within the walls you build.
5.  Build in the Sunshine
Do not wait for the storm to begin your work. Practice living by your principles when the sky is clear and the day is calm. Be kind in small moments. Forgive a minor debt. Share a loaf of bread. Each small act strengthens the walls and settles the foundation before the rains come to test your work.
6.  Endure the Storm
The rains will fall, the streams will rise, and the winds will beat against your house. Do not be afraid. A house built on rock will not fall. These trials are not sent to destroy you, but to prove the strength of what you have built. Stand firm, and you will find your foundation holds.
7.  Use the Mortar of Forgiveness
No wall is perfect. Stones may chip, and cracks may appear. When you fail, or when your neighbor's actions damage the wall, do not tear it down. Instead, apply the mortar of forgiveness. It fills the gaps and makes the bond even stronger than it was before.
8.  Open Your Door
A strong house is not a fortress for you to hide in. It is a shelter and a light for others. When your foundation is secure, open your door to the traveler, the stranger, and the one who is lost in the storm. The true purpose of a well-built house is to be a home not just for oneself, but for many.
