On Seeking a Quiet Place to Make a Wise Choice

I have found that the clamor of many voices, even those of friends, can be like dust in the air, clouding one's sight. Before choosing a new path or deciding a weighty matter for the community, I go away to a lonely place. The quiet of the hills or the stillness before dawn allows the heart to settle like still water, until what is true becomes clear on its surface. This is not about fleeing from your brothers and sisters, but about returning to them with a clearer mind and a steadier heart, ready to serve them with wisdom. I will teach you this simple way.
You will need:
A significant question or decision that weighs upon your heart.
A willingness to be alone with your thoughts and with the Father.
A quiet place, away from the sounds of the village or camp. A hillside, a garden before sunrise, or a secluded shore will serve.
A period of uninterrupted time, at least from one watch of the night to the next.
A simple cloak for warmth if the night air is cool.
A small skin of water, for the body must be cared for even as the spirit seeks.
1. Name the Question You Carry
Before you set out, you must know what you seek. Hold the decision clearly in your mind. Do not wrestle with it yet, simply acknowledge the burden. To see a thing plainly is the first step toward understanding it. You cannot find a lost sheep if you do not first know it is missing.
2. Go Out to a Lonely Place
Leave the company of others. Walk until the sounds of their lives fade and you can hear the whisper of the wind or the call of a night bird. The Father speaks in the still, small voice, not in the whirlwind of the crowd. Seek a place that feels separate, a place where the world can be forgotten for a time.
3. Still Your Body and Breath
Find a place on the earth to sit or to kneel. Be not anxious. Close your eyes and breathe slowly, as the fields breathe after a cool rain. Let the tensions of the day flow out of you and into the ground. A troubled spirit cannot see clearly, just as a rippled pond cannot reflect the sky.
4. Offer Up Your Concern
In the quiet of your heart, present the decision you face. You may speak it aloud to the sky or hold it up silently as a carpenter offers up his work for inspection. Ask not for the answer you desire, but for the path that is righteous and true, even if it is the harder road.
5. Listen in the Great Quiet
Now, be silent. This is the most important work. Do not fill the quiet with your own thoughts and worries. Listen with your whole being. The answer rarely comes as a shout, but as a deep sense of peace about one path, or a subtle feeling of disquiet about another. It is like knowing ripe fruit from green by a sense deeper than sight.
6. Test the Spirit of Each Path
When a feeling of direction begins to form, test it. Imagine you have chosen that path. Walk a few steps in your mind. Does your spirit feel lighter, as if a yoke has been lifted? Or does it feel heavier, more constrained? The way of truth, though it may be difficult, brings a freedom to the soul.
7. Return and Act with Purpose
When clarity or peace has settled upon you, give thanks. Do not linger in solitude forever, for you are a light for others. Rise, and return to your people with a calm heart, ready to act with the quiet confidence that comes from having listened. Your clarity is a gift meant to be shared through your service.
